Writing a memoir

I teach week-long residential courses at Arvon, the home of creative writing established by the late poet laureate, Ted Hughes.

I’ve taught at all three Arvon retreats – in Devon, in Yorkshire (where Hughes lived) and in Shropshire (in the renovated home of the late John Osborne). I devised and co-tutored the first ever week-long online Arvon course during Covid-19.

Where possible, I like to say hello in advance to the people I work with, by creating some kind of online welcome page. It give participants a sense of who they’ll be working with, and a chance to say hi to each other.

These two screen-grabs show the start of one such page, with a short pre-recorded video welcome, and a few replies from Arvon course participants:

After the course finished, I continued to work with participants who wanted that (alongside my co-tutor Alice Jolly, pictured).
